Momentum Engineering is an approved provider of continuing education classes for the State Bar of California Minimum Continuing Legal Education (MCLE) program, in addition to the California Department of Insurance under the Property and Casualty category.

Each class consists of a technical presentation followed by a question and answer session. The classes all count as one (1) credit-hour. Each class topic includes the latest in technology and investigation techniques involved in personal injury litigation issues related to forensic engineering.

01. Accident Reconstruction

Explains what accident reconstruction is and how it is used in liability and damages cases.   Explains typical information gathering activities and presents various case studies that utilize modern techniques such as the interpretation of surveillance videos and electronic data recorders.   Provides a timeline for gathering evidence and the importance of early investigation.   Common terms will be explained and specific examples will be shown to illustrate the use of modern technology.

02. EDR - Automotive Event Data Recorder

Provides an explanation of what crash data retrieval is and how it can be useful to attorneys for specific accident cases.   Educates attorneys on the functions of Event Data Recorder (EDR) systems and how they can be beneficial to accident reconstruction. Provides information about specific auto makers use of Event Data Recorders and the vehicle models which have installed EDRs.   Outlines examples of crash data retrieved by specific auto makers from their installed EDR systems.

03. Heavy Truck - Commercial Vehicles

Provides updated accident statistics for large trucks.   The presentation shows the safety regulations for commercial truck drivers outlined by the U.S. Department of Transportation, including hours of service operation, vehicle maintenance standards, and weight restrictions.   Outlines causes for heavy truck related accidents including jack knifing, brake failure, brake overheating, off-tracking, and provides ways to prevent these occurrences. Describes the different braking systems used in heavy trucks.

04. Intersection Accidents - Red Light Dispute

Learn about the rules, regulations, and codes that are outlined by the California Department of Motor Vehicles concerning lawful intersection entry.   Become familiar with classifications for all intersection signals and corresponding driver regulations.   Discover the data sources available to determine causes for disputed red light accidents along with analyzes of case study examples.

05. Motorcycle Dynamics and Rider Safety

Provides updated accident statistics for motorcycles.   Shows the safety regulations for motorcycle drivers outlined by the California Department Motor Vehicles.   Outlines the motorcycle performance for steering, braking, and obstacle avoidance.   Presents case study.

06. Traffic Engineering - Roadway Design

Informs attendees on accidents, documents, and principles relating to traffic and highway cases.   Shows what factors, including: speed, traffic volume, alignment, traffic control and sight distance, play into a traffic case to determine liability. Documents, like: SWITRS, FARS, TASAS and design/as-built plans give information about the scene of the accident. Finally, important designs in the roadway, such as the clear zone, roadside barriers and design speed for turning radius, all help to determine why the accident occurred.   Such information assists lawyers in traffic accident cases.
